3 intense days

Last three days, as I was aware of from weeks... were all that I expected, quick and intense. Lots of pressure but I was able to handle it well and they went off without a hiccup. I almost lost it yesterday with my co-workers extremely corny and unprofessional behaviour but I kept my calm, shut my mouth and indulged his demeanor and I think I came off with the better of it.

Monday evening, arrived here before the rest and realised everyone had a bit at the airport so just ordered Room Service, ironed by clothes and prepared for Day 1.

Tuesday morning went exactly as scheduled, the agenda was right on target. Afternoon was when some discussions started going off a tangent and I thought it was good in a way because a lot of my presentation didnt really focus on the right stuff  but it was a great discussion that was needed. Joe handled it well. Evening we met up with the other teams and went for Mongolian BBQ which was great. Thats when Joe started with his corny jokes and stupid comments. Adam was a little stressed and he didnt really take it that well. I could see he was very uneasy around Joe who wouldnt stop taking his case. Food was great as usual, I experimented twice and was happy with the results. Dessert was really bad and I couldnt have more than one spoon. I managed to work till late and then did some workout before sleeping. Long and tiring day.

Wednesday was completely off the Agenda but I think I handled it well. I wasnt thrown too off guard because of tuesday and I would make sure everyone stayed on track even though not on schedule. We had the right people and got a lot of work done. Evening we went to the fish ladder which is an artificial ladder build to facilitate the fish to go up-stream by jumping over the dam. It was kinda of a let down specially cuz we saw most of the carp fish stuck on the bottom of the ladder, apparently we didnt realise they were spawning and typically its the Salmon that jumps over. We dont really know what happened to the 'Carp fish'. We went to the 'BOB' after that which is in downtown madison with a lot of restaurants in there, we went to the Kabab place which was ok food, nothing great. Joe went a little crazy with his talk and I really had to hold my tongue from going to his level of indecent comments about women.

We got a bunch of work done today to understand how we are going ahead from now and its really scary how many tasks have come out but we seemed to manage it well. Finally I am at the airport and have managed to get the direct flight to ATL instead of what I had originally planned and will be getting home about 1.5 hours before. Today is 'get your child to work day' and we have a really young kid making announcements for American Eagle and I can hear a child being prompted by the parent on what to announce word by word... its like an echo.

Aight, time to follow up on some items if I want to go for that vacation next week!

Finding Flow

When you move,
You groove.
When you flow,
You grow. --Lariv Athem

Finding Flow:
Athletes refer to it as "being in the zone" and artists and musicians as "aesthetic rapture.” For decades now, a remarkable researcher from the University of Chicago -– and author of President Clinton's favorite book -– has studied exactly this. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi started with art students, then chess players, musicians, inner-city basketball players, and eventually Bornean weavers and European monks, asking them to describe their experience in moments that stood out as the best in their lives. Across the board, they reported feeling a sense of effortless action, and something in the actual process of getting involved with an activity left the person feeling that s/he were a part of something greater, just moving along with the logic of the activity. He calls this state Flow, and describes how it is accessible to anyone doing any activity. [ more ]

Take up an activity today in which you find Flow. Take a look at Csikszentmihalyi's eight components of an experience of Flow. [ more ]

Off to the airport again

And that ends my 48 hours in ATL, I must say it was well worth it.

Home cooked indian food for all 4 meals (yes, pizza made at home is still indian food), lots of sleep and rest. I did do work yesterday till 1 am but I always watched Sopranos and Big Love and hung out at my Aunts so that I can watch HBO.

This week is pretty big for me, I have been preparing for it for last 3 weeks so its going to be exciting. I also have my bag packed for my vacation next week and have a dinner thing set up for Friday so everyone can 'meet the parents' , it should be interesting.

I am getting a really sucky downloading speed for my printer driver right now, so looks like I wont be able to print my boarding pass.. oh well!

Allright.. Cabbie Chris is here!

The Bravest of the Brave

All humanity is one undivided and indivisible family, and each one of us is responsible for the misdeeds of all the others. I cannot detach myself from the wickedest soul. --Mahatma Gandhi

Inspiration of the Day:
"The bravest of the brave," "The greatest man I have ever known." These are the words of those who knew Capt. Mbaye Diagne, a young Senegalese army officer who served in Rwanda as an unarmed U.N. military observer. He was a hero, in the spirit of Oskar Schindler in the 1940's. From literally the first hours of the Rwandan genocide in 1994, Capt. Mbaye simply ignored the U.N.'s standing orders not to intervene, and single-handedly began saving lives. In the days and weeks that followed, Capt. Mbaye became a legend among U.N. forces in Kigali, by continuing his solo rescue missions with an uncanny ability to charm his way past dangerous checkpoints. [ more ]

12 hours in Chicago

Been a busy busy bee.... and had the best 12 hours in Chicago since a very long time. My flight got cancelled (mechanical problems) so around 7 they announce on the board the 5.50 flght is cxld ! Not sure what that means but I kinda get the point when people are up and running to get in line to find other flights. A little late to catch on, I try the direct flight assistance phone line where they tell me, ' Sir, you have a paper ticket from United to Delta and you will need to see a delta rep" and thats a line which extends almost outside the terminal. Stuck on the airport till 8 and finally ended with a hotel stay at Wyndham Glenview Suites (which surprisingly was really nice) and flight next morning at 9.

I was glad of this as when I called Mauli she was in town and so was her aunt and its been very long since I met them. So I take a cab directly into town and then the night starts... we go to best buy to get a phone charger and then Webster's Wine Bar which is little off the beaten track but it was a really cozy place with tapas and very good wine selection. We choose the Stellenbosch, a blend of Pinotage, Merlot and 5 kinds of Cab which was splendid. That goes on till 12, then both of us drop her aunt off at home and then proceed on a night of revelry at the Signature Room Lounge in John Hancock with Martinis. That closed by 2 and then we went hunting around Division street for a club/bar with a place to sit. Ended up in a bar that I dont remember the name now... Dropped her back off at 4.30 and got to my hotel at 5. Managed to get sleep for 2 hours before I had to head out back to the airport at 8.

Got back to ATL around 1 pm yesterday and after some really good home cooked food slept all day. Left the window open last night, and the night was full of dreams, two of them in particular which stayed:

1: A certain friend who recently got married (I used to go out with her) calls me to tell me she is going to have a baby in a few months now and she just wanted to explain to me why she got married (becoz she was pregnant) and that she should have listened to me and had the guy use a condom :-) Dont you like it when dreams self-affirm your ego ha ha...

2: Not so self-assuring this one was confirming my lack of map skills with me driving around to find my cozin's apartment with her next to me on the phone. I miss the turn and take the next one but I can recognize any street names, I am on a street called Bellevue and then I am thinking to myself what it means and suddenly I have to stop on the shoulder because I am out of breath. I get up this time as I am really choked up and cant breath due to the cold draft  from an open window!

Thats when I am up and making a list of things to do today...

Airports galore

So this week has been a week of airports:
Atlanta - Hartsfield International Airport on Sunday (8 hours) and Madison
Madison - Dane County Airport  on Monday  (2 hours)
Chicago - O'Hare International Airport on Monday (2 hours) and Reno
Reno - Reno/Tahoe International Airport on Thursday (2 hours)
Dallas - Fort Worth  International Airport on Thursday (3 hours) and Madison
Madison - Dane County Airport on Friday (2 hours)
Chicago - O'Hare International Airport on Friday (2 hours) and Atlanta

I am in Chicago second time this week! How crazy is that.

Yesterday was pretty crazy, I had calls starting at 6.30 in the morning (8.30 CST) which went all till 9 am. After which attended a bit of the customer I was on the learning trip for which was completely pointless. Had a beer from a local brewery at 11 am at the airport before we embarked on the crazy long journey through Dallas. With time change and everything it was from 11 am in the morning to 11 pm in the night by the time I got back to Madison.

Went back to the hotel and had to check out completely, so I got a locker in the hotel which to my surprise was pretty big and I managed to pack all my 7 month accumulation in like 7 boxes and 5 paper bags and about 30 clothers on hangers. It was quite a lot of work. I probably slept around 1 am.

Up again at 6 am today with my final packing and checked out of the hotel. I am going to be doing demos so today's retreat was in a meeting room in Holiday Inn where we went through how to demo the system and then run through the scripts like we are demo-ing and they basically would give you feedback. I thought it was pretty helpful even though I was very skeptical going into it.

In the middle I had calls with customers from 11-12, 1-1.30, 2-2.30 and 2.30-3.30.
My flight was delayed to 7 so I got on to another flight which got me to Chicago instead of Cleveland and I got lucky and managed to get on an earlier flight at 5.50 instead of the originally 7.15 flight. Now that flight is delayed till 6.20 which will still get me before my original time but I have a feeling its not going to leave till 7 and will probably get me back in ATL around the same time that I was originally scheduled. Oh well... not a big issue for me. I can hear some others who are going to be missing their flights sitting around me... poor guys.

Aight time to board my 7th flight this week :-)

Challenging the Cult of Speed

Through return to simple living comes control of desires. In control of desires stillness is attained. In stillness the world is restored. --Lao Tzu

Challenging the Cult of Speed:
He had a major Aha Moment when he caught himself trying to save time by looking up one-minute bedtime stories to read to his son. Carl Honore began a deeper inquiry into the cult of speed that informs life in the 21st century; the result was In Praise of Slowness, a book that explains how our world got so fast, the dangerous implications of this, and why conscious slowing down just might be the only way back to a more balanced existence. Honore follows the worldwide Slow movements making their way into the mainstream -- from meditation sessions in Tokyo, Chi Kung squash classes in Edinburgh, to a TV-free household in Toronto and to Italy, home of the slow food revolution. Growing groups of people are quietly beginning to rethink their relationship with time. [ more ]

Wild Swans

Sitting in this boring office in this deserted land in northern nevada where
I am only 2 hours away from beautiful napa valley and San Francisco.

I am dreaming of being on a beach, palm trees and wild swans...

"Wild Swans"
by Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950)

I looked in my heart while the wild swans went over.
And what did I see I had not seen before?
Only a question less or a question more;
Nothing to match the flight of wild birds flying.
Tiresome heart, forever living and dying,
House without air, I leave you and lock your door.
Wild swans, come over the town, come over
The town again, trailing your legs and crying!

*Allison Funk comments:

I am writing this on the Gulf shore of Florida,
where I've been staying for a week. Every day I
have walked a path along shallow estuarine
lagoons bordering a forest of mangroves. I've
seen ibises and herons - the yellow-crowned
night heron, the green backed, the little blue
and even the shy great blue heron. I've watched
a snowy egret feeding and the anhinga drying its
silvery wings, but most thrilling of all has been
the experience of being suddenly passed by a great
egret, that elegant long-necked white bird flying
above me, its huge wings, its legs trailing - so
much like what Edna St. Vincent Millay describes
in the final line of her poem, "Wild Swans."

I'm drawn to Millay's poem for the many ways in
which I can relate to it: how well I know that
"house without air," which is her heart and, I'm
sure, a real house too. It's that house/heart
containing "only a question less or a question
more" that Millay's speaker longs to "leave,"
whose door she'd like to "lock" behind her.
She contrasts the airless place she inhabits to
the space the birds cross: "nothing to match
the flight of wild birds flying."
It almost seems possible if the birds return when
she implores them ("Wild swans, come over the
town, come over / The town again") that she
could trade her domestic life for one the wild
creatures of the air represent. This is why the
poem, for me, is exhilarating at first. It
provides me with the sense that I could "fly
away" with the large birds and leave my heart,
my house, my town behind.

But Millay's poem is more complicated than that,
and alas, so are our lives. The poem's music
argues against the simple fantasy I've described.
The feeling of release, the exaltation of being
freed from whatever binds us, should be written,
as it were, in a major key. But the music of
this poem sounds "minor" to me. Its tone derives
primarily from its sad music. The word I hear
above all others in the poem is "crying" - not
only because it's the last word in the poem, but
because of the ways it is reinforced by the words
that rhyme with it, especially "trailing" and "dying."

In many other ways, the poem's music contributes to the
sense I have of melancholy being the dominant emotion
in the poem. But I'll mention just one more aspect here:
five out of the poem's eight lines end in an unstressed
syllable. "Crying," "dying," even, paradoxically,
"flying" give the impression of falling, as do the two
lines ending in the word "over." The narrator's spirits,
likewise, don't "lift" in these lines.

Today, far from my usual post in the Midwest, I'm
watching Gulf pelicans, gulls, terns, egrets, and
herons in flight. Rereading Millay's poem has
reinforced this pleasure, but reminded me too of
the questions that await me when I return to my house.

Biggest Little City in the World

Interesting facts:

Fact 1 (I have not been here): Reno will really bowl you over with its National Bowling Stadium. This $50 million project is the only one of its kind anywhere in the world. Used strictly for the major national tournaments, this stadium draws as many as 100,000 bowlers to Reno in a 6-month period.

Fact 2 (I saw this last night, its huge): When it comes to arches, Reno has one of its own. Reno’s arch spans Virginia Street at 3rd Street and has welcomed visitors to Reno since 1926. Originally, the arch was erected in celebration of the completion of the transcontinental Victory and Lincoln highways. Eventually, it was decided the arch would remain a permanent fixture and the slogan from a 1910 prizefight was added – “The Biggest Little City in the World.” The arch, as it stands today, was unveiled in 1987.

Fact 3 (not very impressive): Now that’s some kind of bug! It would be almost impossible not to notice the large spider that hovers above Reno. David Farmbrough created the 18 foot tall and 30 foot wide spider, made of irrigation pipe and the body of a Volkswagen, in 1978. It has dotted numerous Reno sites since.

Fact 4 (dont really need to go to a museum, slot machines are everywhere including the airport): Other than Las Vegas, no other city than Reno would be more suitable to house a museum dedicated to the slot machine. Charlie Fey redesigned the gambling machine and more than a million comparable slots have been reproduced since his prototype. Original reel strips are on display along with the explanation of how the cherries, lemons and strawberries were significant to the players’ winnings – flavored bubble gum was given as prizes!

Fact 5 (I agree, we were going to stay at the Hilton but ended up in a courtyard): Vacancy! You can bet you won’t be hard pressed to find an available room in the Reno area. There are approximately 22,000 rooms to choose from. One hint, though – weekends and holidays may make finding a room just a little bit tougher.

Fact 6 (have not seen this): The Joy of … Baldini’s? Since Baldini’s Sports Casino started awarding a 6-pack of Pepsi each time a video poker player hit a natural 4-of-a-kind, the casino has been Pepsi’s largest account in the state of Nevada. Along with being of favorite among visitors, you can bet the casino is the joy of Pepsi.

Fact 7 (cheaper yes, fine dining no): Just like Las Vegas, restaurants in the Reno area have great prices - due in part to the earnings of the casinos that greatly subsidize the prices. Many people travel to Reno just for the food – a fine dining experience at drive through prices!

Fact 8 (no time for bowling): With over seventy championship lanes and the latest technology available; Reno is considered the bowling capital of the world.

Fact 9 (I spread this knowledge): Known for its lenient criteria in granting divorces, Reno is a hot spot for quick divorces. Once you’ve proved a 6-week residency, your divorce can be processed in as little as 2 weeks.

Fact 10 (will look out for this tonight): Send in the Clown – one clown only, this one is big enough! Topsy the Clown adorns the sign outside of Circus Circus, and boy, is he hard to miss! Topsy is 148 feet tall and weighs in at a mere 90,000 pounds.

I am so jetlagged with the time difference, today was the first day I got up at 6.30 instead of 5. I also managed to push myself to 11 pm (2 am for me) last night.

Yesterday went well, besides the fact that I was sleepy by 4 everything else went pretty smoothly. Nick, Stacy and Steven are all experienced implementers so I can learn a lot about the software from there. Steven used to be a part of the R&D team so it helps that he knows some other integration issues.

I am really on a Testing trip but they have so many build issues, I havent got a chance to learn much about testing at all. I am learning other things which may or may not pertain to me for my current customer but it will be valuable in future.

We managed to go to Hilton and Harrah casinos yesterday. Had dinner at Andreotti's in Harrah which is a very different Northern Italian food. I have to agree with these other people, the food is pretty mediocre. I would expect better food from a place like Reno/Tahoe where there are so many tourists. The place also is pretty run down, except for the arch and the little downtown area (maybe 1 block) there is really nothing to see. They dont have the theme casinos like in Vegas. Its like a run down version of Vegas.

The fact that its so cold does not really help. Its definately very picturesque with snow capped mountains surrounding it. Its about 8 miles from California border, Tahoe skiing areas are just 30 minutes away but in terms of city, there is really limited stuff to do.

Be Your Own Story

Toni Morrison

Go out and save the world. That is to suggest to you that with energy and right thinking you can certainly improve, certainly you might even rescue it. Now that's a heavy burden to be placed on one generation by a member of another generation because it's a responsibility we ought to share, not save the world, but simply to love it, meaning don't hurt it. []

Of course, you're general, but you're also specific. A citizen and a person, and the person you are is like nobody else on the planet. Nobody has the exact memory that you have. What is now known is not all what you are capable of knowing. You are your own stories and therefore free to imagine and experience what it means to be human without wealth. What it feels like to be human without domination over others, without reckless arrogance, without fear of others unlike you, without rotating, rehearsing and reinventing the hatreds you learned in the sandbox. And although you don't have complete control over the narrative (no author does, I can tell you), you could nevertheless create it.

Although you will never fully know or successfully manipulate the characters who surface or disrupt your plot, you can respect the ones who do by paying them close attention and doing them justice. The theme you choose may change or simply elude you, but being your own story means you can always choose the tone. It also means that you can invent the language to say who you are and what you mean. But then, I am a teller of stories and therefore an optimist, a believer in the ethical bend of the human heart, a believer in the mind's disgust with fraud and its appetite for truth, a believer in the ferocity of beauty. So, from my point of view, which is that of a storyteller, I see your life as already artful, waiting, just waiting and ready for you to make it art.

Reno 911

"The brave men and women of the Washoe County Sheriff's Department give you the 411 on the thin khaki line that keeps Reno, Nevada on the straight and narrow. Led by Lt. Jim Dangle, the officers of Reno 911! will teach you all about law enforcement and the nitty-gritty lives of a group of cops who won't hesitate to beat you with your own shoe."

And thats where I am, Washoe County! Got here at 7 pm PST. I have changed 3 time zones in the last 2 days. EST to CST to PST. Its really 12.30 in the night for me and I am just about to crash.

Reno looks like a run down Las Vegas but it also has a very scenic far off view of mountains of Tahoe region which right now are snow capped. I am really not prepared for the weather, its freezing here. It was supposed to be 60s and 70s this week and I am wearing a half shirt today, might have to buy a coat if this weather keeps up tomorrow. From 88 deg in Atlanta to 38 degrees in Reno.... definately not good for your system I would think.

Last night, I got home by 10.30. Sent out some emails, did my expenses, laundry, packing for this trip. Got up at 6 am, got ready for my meeting which by the way went great even though we were completely unprepared. I dont know about this interface co-worker, he is disorganized and kinda rude. I sent him an email saying, I think it went well, but no reply from him. Dont think he is very nice besides I have never seen him in person, he is always on the phone.

Non stop calls till 1 and then flight. Has some nasty quesadilla on chicago airport and then a spinach calzone at Claim Jumper in Reno. Nothing special. Did go to check out Hilton, which is basically a casino hotel. Very small place, I doubt there is much to do here. Lots of tourists, tons of mexican places, diverse crowd, lots of Texans.

Aight.. time for bed...

Bridging Art & Spirituality

The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance. --Aristotle

Bridging Art & Spirituality:
Meet Sister Wendy Beckett, Britains self-taught art nun turned international celebrity -- who never watched TV before she was on it. A nun in the contemplative tradition, she lived most of her life in silence and seclusion before a chance encounter led to her becoming the unlikely presenter for a series of highly acclaimed art documentaries. Today she is one of the worlds best known and best-loved art critics, familiar to millions from her hugely successful series on PBS. Sister Wendy believes that each work of great art has a fascinating story to tell about what it means to be human. Her quick wit, gentle demeanor and deep involvement in art and spirituality has opened up the bridge between both worlds for millions across the globe. [ more ]

Answer my email!

So I am stuck at something while working right now, actually I am not even sure how to do this call tomorrow with my customer because I havent got an email back from my co-worker. I need help with setting this up and its less than 15 hours to the call. Crunch time baby!

I got a one time entry in the brand new Crown Room in Terminal C at Atlanta Airport. I came to the airport at 1 to drop Puneet off, his flight got delayed so I ended up sticking around till 3 before I decided it would be pointless for me to go back home for 3 hours and come back to the airport. So I come to the crown room as I was interesting in joining it but 400 bucks or 70k miles! I dont think so.. thats a little too much. They will knock 50 bucks every status I achieve, so I think I will wait till I achieve Platinum Status before I join any of this. In any case, I had from 4 pm to 7.30 and she let me use it one time.

Yesterday was another long day, went to Virginia Highlands for lunch at Surin and gelato again at Paolos. That was followed by a tour of Georgia tech, driving through tech square, then walking around in the student center, commons and shaft, drive by CRC, astroturf, east campus, bobby dodd, library... Then we went to Centennial Olympic Park and CNN center. Took the tour of CNN which was interesting. Went to Atlantic Station and walked around in the shopping area. Dinner at Queen of Sheba on Briarcliff and then home spending quality time with family drinking wine and going through photo albums.

Its been a good weekend. I have been working last 3 hours with as much information I can gather about the meeting tomorrow, I am still pretty much no where at achieving some clarity over what we will go over tomorrow. I have a feeling we will just be playing it by the ear.

Angina, Epilepsy and Angiography

My problems are worth nothing today when I am looking at lives around me, it seems I am just whining, its those who are facing these issues that really are brave.

Altaf's brother just had an Epilepsy fit, which is:

"A seizure is the result of a sudden burst of excess electrical activity in the brain. This causes the brain's messages to become temporarily halted or mixed up. The type of seizure a person has depends on the area of the brain where this activity occurs."

My uncle had Angina pain which is:

"
Angina describes the pain, and sometimes breathlessness or choking feeling, caused by restricted blood flow in the arteries that supply the heart. The word angina comes from the Latin angerer, which means to strangle."

He needed to get an Angiography which is:

"Coronary angiography is an X-ray examination of the blood vessels or chambers of the heart. A very small tube (catheter) is inserted into a blood vessel in your groin or arm. The tip of the tube is positioned either in the heart or at the beginning of the arteries supplying the heart, and a special fluid (called a contrast medium or dye) is injected. This fluid is visible by X-ray, and the pictures that are obtained are called angiograms.

Another name for this test is coronary arteriography."

The medical world does not need to be a mystery to the common man any more, thanks to the internet we can learn what is happening to our body and the latest development in the medical field.

Day before after an incident in Starbucks (where I found a fly in my frappe), I went with Samir to check out his place at Enclave on Briarcliff. Great location, we are going to have some great evenings there. After that we went to Chatpati for some Karachi Chat and Chole Bhature and some Berry Berry Good Cold Stone icecream to top it off. Then went to pick up Sumier at the airport and ended up in Rosa Mexicana for some expensive Gaucamole (so not worth it) and a pomogrenate Martini (carrying on my recent POM craze).

Yesterday was great because I managed to go for a run around Dalyrimple Rd and then lunch at Tin Drum, a visit to the High to see the Chuck Close Exhibit with Joya. He has some really interesting self potrait techniques, specially the hologram. Also checked out the new wings which were great to see, specially the contempory arts section. Decided against the Tenessee Willaims play at shakespeare tavern and went to Bamboo Garden with Altaf, Sumier, Joya, Devang, Shameet and Abid. Visted Paolos for some Gelato, met up with Puneet, Sis, Toral and Arpit at Intermetzzo before we went home for the night.

Its going to be a long day of sightseeing today, last night was not the most amazing because of my makeshift bed... but I feel as if I have been gifted every day looking at the pain all around me but still untouched by it..

Life is good!

Hospital Call

This may be a joke but this is the reality that needs to change in the
healthcare world:

*A woman called a local hospital. "Hello. Could you connect me to the
person who gives information about patients. I'd like to find out if a
patient is getting better, doing as expected, or getting worse."

The voice on the other end said, "What is the patient's name and room
number?"

"Sarah Finkel, room 302."

"I'll connect you with the nursing station."

"3-A Nursing Station. How can I help You?"

"I'd like to know the condition of Sarah Finkel in room 302."

"Just a moment. Let me look at her records. Mrs. Finkel is doing very
well. In fact, she's had two full meals, her blood pressure is fine. She
is to be taken off the heart monitor in a couple of hours and, if she
continues this improvement, Dr. Cohen is going to send her home
Tuesday at noon."

The woman said, "What a relief! Oh, that's fantastic... that's wonderful
news!"

The nurse said, "From your enthusiasm, I take it you are a close family
member or a very close friend!"

"Neither I'm Sarah Finkel in 302! Nobody here tells me anything!."*

A Symbolic Quest for Better Living

It is good to have an end to journey towards; but it is the journey that matters in the end. --Ursula K. LeGuin

Inspiration of the Day:
A dangerously obese man has captured the heart of America by walking alone across the country to lose weight and find his soul. Steve Vaught was in a car accident in which two people died, sending him into years of depression and comfort eating. Hitting 400+ pounds, he realized that he would die if he carried on. After a year and more than 2300 miles on the road, his journey has become a symbolic quest for a better way of living. In response to a $5m commercial offer, he says, 'But how much does my integrity cost? I have done this walk to get my integrity back. I am not going to sell it.' [ more ]

Be The Change (something I need to work on):
The next time something is within walking distance put away your car keys, get your sneakers out, and see if it changes the way in which you experience your environment. Also, drop Steve a note of encouragement! [ more ]

I got the vaccine too!

A report on CNN wakes me today to another threat. They do a pretty good job to keep everyone perpetually scared! In a gist here is an excerpt:

"Two infected airline passengers may have helped spread Iowa's mumps epidemic to six other Midwestern states, health officials said Wednesday, the latest example of how quickly disease can spread through air travel."

And Wisconsin is one of them! So something to look forward to, swollen glands, hearing loss, meningitis and fertility-diminishing swollen testicles. A great thing to start my day with.

I had a pretty nice day yesterday. Again started off real slow with dropping my sister off and doing my work at my own pace. With summer coming a visit to the Salon was necessary so around 4 (I love working from home!) I went to this really cute place on peachtree called Sugarcoat. They have a sport combo which was great.

I had to cancel my plans with Samir yesterday. It was Harsh's birthday so we went out to Alfredos for dinner, which was amazing food and even better wine but the server was downright rude. I was scared to even talk to him! When he said thankyou it felt like he was scolding us. The food was just too good and overshadowed the bad service to an extent that I didnt even remember the bad service when paying the bill, which says a lot!

Was planning to see Brick but got delayed, then planned to see Tsotsi with Vishwas and that got cancelled too. Ended up at Istanbul with Harsh where we smoked some really good hokkah. I am glad we went there, it was lively and relaxing at the same time. Not an overwhelming amount of people, but just right for entertainment. I would say we had an unexpectedly good time.

Now playing: Stereophonics- Dakota.
Not worth writing out the lyrics, its the music that makes this song than the words.

Disaster Dinner

What started off as a normal day where I go drop Toral in the morning, do some shopping and go for lunch with Arpit, Toral and Vilas to Sweet Tomatoes turns out to be a disaster by the end of it.

We had to go pick my sister up from the Airport and get stuck on Roswell while she waits on the Airport. Then we decide to go for Italian food to Brio. Arpit and Vishwas joined us there.

That was when it all started, first we sit outside and there are ducks (contrary to the server who said swans!) who were walking around, biting patrons and making me feel very uncomfortable  (inherent paranoia of bird flu). So we moved inside in a corner where there were mosquitoes (i swear!). We ordered Bruchetta and an Estancia Pinot Noir to start with. Turns out the bruchetta was something completely unexpected with a sweet sauce on it. The Pinot was too spicy for the food we were having. The pastas were either with too much sauce (in my case), or too little (in Arpits), too much cheese (Komals case) or too little (Vishwas). She forgot to gave us parmesean on the top and we had to ask for it. The bill came to 20 bucks per person which we were not expecting either!

All in all... it was a disaster dinner!

Ofcourse that was followed by an hours drive to drop my sister off in Suwanee, which was NOT FUN!

Silence at the Emmys

This is what I give. I give an _expression of care every day to each child, to help him realize that he is unique. I end the program by saying, "you've made this day a special day by just your being you. There's no person in the whole world like you, and I like you just the way you are." --Fred Rogers

Inspiration of the Day:
Hundreds of millions around the world recognize his face, yet he bought clothes from a thrift store, drove a humble car and lived in a simple home. In 1984, he even issued a statement to the Supreme Court to say that he had "absolutely no objections" if consumers taped his telecast, violating the copyright rule. In 1999, when inducted into the TV Hall of Fame, he used his moments of glory to bring silence in the world; he brought the entire audience to tears as he accepted his Emmy Award by asking people to spend a moment in silence thinking about someone who touched their lives and made them better people. His name was Fred Rogers, better known as Mister Rogers. [ more ]
